Why Gulfstream Built Two Flagships
Gulfstream ended G650 production in February 2025 and replaced it with two aircraft instead of one, the G700 and the G800, rather than a single direct successor. The G700 earned its FAA type certificate on March 29, 2024, with EASA certification following that May. The G800 followed more than a year later, earning both FAA and EASA approval on the same day, April 16, 2025, roughly a year behind its original 2024 target.
Both aircraft share the same two Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines, each rated at 18,250 pounds of takeoff thrust, and the same maximum cruise altitude of 51,000 feet. The airframe underneath is not the same, though. The G700 stretches the G650’s fuselage by roughly 10 feet to add a fifth living area. The G800 keeps the G650’s original fuselage length instead. That freed-up weight goes into fuel, and the extra fuel buys the extra range. Neither aircraft replaced the other. Gulfstream split the G650’s old buyer base by mission: room went to the G700, reach went to the G800.

The G800 flies 8,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.85, a 450 nm advantage over the G700’s 7,750 nm, both figures Gulfstream publishes for its own aircraft. Maximum operating speed is identical on both jets at Mach 0.935, so the range gap is the only performance difference that separates them.
Run the arithmetic before treating 450 nm as decisive. At normal cruise speed, both aircraft cover roughly 487 knots true airspeed, since they share the same wing design. That 450 nm gap works out to about 55 minutes of additional flying. On a nonstop New York-to-Sydney routing, that is the difference between landing with comfortable reserves in a G800 and needing a fuel stop in a G700. On the large majority of ultra-long-range trips either aircraft already flies nonstop, 55 minutes changes nothing.
Both jets give up range at a similar rate when pushed faster. Flying at Mach 0.90 instead of Mach 0.85 costs the G700 about 1,100 nm. The G800 gives up even more at that same speed, dropping to 7,000 nm, a loss of roughly 1,200 nm. Neither aircraft’s identical top speed creates any timing advantage over the other on a given leg. The entire performance decision comes down to whether your longest real trip needs that extra 450 nm or not.
Cabin Dimensions and Layout
Cabin height and width match exactly on both aircraft, at 6 feet 3 inches and 8 feet 2 inches. Nobody boarding either jet notices a difference in headroom. The entire gap is length. The G700 cabin runs 56 feet 11 inches excluding baggage, against 46 feet 10 inches on the G800, a difference of just over 10 feet. Gulfstream stretched the G700’s fuselage for that extra length and kept the G800’s at the G650’s original length.
That 10 feet buys a fifth living area on the G700 against four on the G800. It also gives the G700 more usable sleeping positions on a long-haul crew rotation. Both aircraft seat a maximum of 19 passengers. In practice, the fifth zone on the G700 becomes a private master suite, a dedicated crew rest compartment, or a separate conference area instead of a shared multipurpose one.
Legs past 14 hours change the math. If you want a private space to sleep, separate from the main cabin, that fifth zone is exactly what the cabin-length premium buys. Under 10 hours, the math flips. Four zones do the same job the G700’s five would, and the G800’s extra range becomes the more useful spec for the same money.
Production Status and Pricing
Both aircraft carry active order backlogs, unlike the G650 vs G700 comparison, where one side is a mature pre-owned market. There is no established resale market for either the G700 or G800 yet, since G700 deliveries only began in 2024 and G800 deliveries only started after April 2025 certification.
Market reporting puts a new G700 in the high $70 millions to about $80 million. The G800’s base price runs lower, around $72 million. Equip it fully, though, and that gap mostly closes. A completed G800 with a full interior and avionics package commonly lands at $95 million to $100 million. That puts it within a few million dollars of a G700 at the midpoints, once both are priced the way an actual buyer configures one. Charter rates track the same pattern. G800 rates run slightly higher, at $14,000 to $18,000 per hour, largely because fewer G800 aircraft have reached the charter fleet so far.
Given how close the two land on price once equipped, mission drives the decision far more than budget does. Neither aircraft is the “value” choice the way the G650ER is against either of them. Both cost roughly the price of new, current-generation Gulfstream capability. The only real question is which capability you need more of.
Who Should Charter or Buy Which
Choose the G700 if your longest routine trips run under about 7,500 nautical miles. You also need enough passengers, or long enough hours in the air, that a fifth living area gets real use. A dedicated crew suite on 12-hour-plus legs is one legitimate, specific reason to choose it over the G800. Wanting the largest cabin Gulfstream builds is another.
Choose the G800 if a specific nonstop city pair beyond about 7,750 nm is the actual reason you are shopping in this class. It should not be a nice-to-have on top of range you would already get from the G700. New York to Sydney and Los Angeles to Johannesburg are the kind of routes where that extra reach is the entire point.
Who This Is Not For
Neither aircraft fits a buyer or charterer whose longest routine leg runs under about 6,000 nautical miles. Below that distance, a Gulfstream G650 or even a super-midsize jet like the Bombardier Challenger 350 covers the same trip for a fraction of the hourly rate. Neither flagship’s extra range or extra cabin zone ever gets used for what it was built to do. Anyone who needs a tail delivered in the next year, rather than a multi-year order position, should look at the pre-owned G650ER market instead. New-build lead times rule out near-term delivery on either the G700 or G800 entirely.
What Would Change Our Answer
Two things would flip this verdict. G800 deliveries could accelerate enough that the fleet grows well past the G700’s. If that happens, charter availability and rate parity would likely close the small pricing gap that currently favors the G800 on paper. The range advantage would then look even more attractively priced. And Gulfstream could someday offer a stretched-cabin variant of the G800’s longer-range wing and fuel system. That single aircraft would collapse this entire comparison, because the only real reason to choose between them today is the tradeoff a combined variant would remove.
