Private Jet to Aspen: Airport Limits, Costs, Alternates

Booking a private jet to Aspen starts with a legal question, not a price question. Your aircraft either fits the published limits at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport or it does not. One short runway at high elevation, a hard wingspan cap, and a night curfew do most of the deciding.
Those limits also shape your cost. They push you into a smaller aircraft and force fuel and passenger trade-offs. They also send the jet elsewhere to park overnight.
The Published Limits at Sardy Field
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (KASE, also called Sardy Field) has one runway, measuring 8,006 feet by 100 feet. It is oriented 15/33 and slopes uphill roughly 2% toward the southeast. There is no second runway and no parallel option.
Field elevation is roughly 7,820 feet. The airport’s own high-altitude safety page cites 7,815 feet, while FAA airport data lists 7,837 feet. The airport reports density altitude near 9,555 feet on a spring morning and as high as 11,000 feet in midsummer.
Two hard aircraft limits apply. The airport prohibits any aircraft with a tip-to-tip wingspan greater than 95 feet. It also caps maximum allowable gross landing weight at 100,000 pounds on dual wheels, or 160,000 pounds dual tandem.
Curfew, night rules, and the approaches
The airport is attended 0700 to 2300 MST and closed 2300 to 0700. Stage I aircraft are banned outright. Stage II aircraft may operate only from 0700 until 30 minutes after sunset. Stage III aircraft may operate until 2300.
Aspen publishes two instrument approaches, a LOC/DME-E and an RNAV (GPS)-F, plus the Roaring Fork Visual to Runway 15. Every one of them is circling-only to Runway 15, and none is authorized at night. Runway 33 has no straight-in instrument approach. In practice traffic lands on 15 and departs on 33, and a takeoff on Runway 15 requires a signed waiver.
That combination is why weather diverts Aspen traffic so often. Circling-only approaches to a single usable runway, nearby terrain from 12,500 to 14,000 feet, and a hard closing time all stack against you.
Which Aircraft Can Actually Land There
The 95-foot wingspan cap, not the runway length, rules out most heavy jets. The Gulfstream G650ER spans 99 feet 7 inches. The Bombardier Global 7500 spans about 104 feet. Neither fits, regardless of how well it performs.
Aircraft that commonly work at Aspen sit in the light through super-midsize range. The Bombardier Challenger 350 spans roughly 69 feet. The Embraer Phenom 300, the Cessna Citation X, and the King Air 350 all clear the cap comfortably.
Fitting is only half of it. Departing at 7,820 feet with a summer density altitude near 11,000 feet cuts takeoff performance sharply. Operators respond by reducing fuel, reducing passengers, or both.
That produces two common workarounds. Crews tanker extra fuel in from a low-elevation airport so they burn less on departure. Or they file a short repositioning hop to Rifle or Grand Junction, fuel there, then continue east with a full load.

Eagle County Regional Airport is the usual first alternate, with a 9,000-foot runway at 6,548 feet and Signature Aviation handling general aviation. Rifle Garfield County Airport runs 24 hours with no noise restrictions, which matters for a delayed arrival. Grand Junction Regional Airport has the longest runway and the lowest elevation of the four.
Denver-area airports work as a last resort. The drive is roughly four hours in winter over I-70 and Vail Pass. Do not plan on the Independence Pass shortcut either. CDOT closes Highway 82 there every winter, usually from late October or mid-November until late May.
Should You Fly a Private Jet to Aspen, or Land Nearby?
Landing at the closest airport is often the slower and more expensive choice. Count diversion risk, aircraft restrictions and peak-day delays. Eagle or Rifle plus a 75-minute drive often gets you to your door sooner. That is the opposite of what most charter quotes imply.
The math is simple. A diversion from Aspen usually ends at Rifle or Grand Junction anyway. Now you pay for the extra flight time, scramble for ground transport, and drive at night. Filing directly into Rifle costs a predictable 80-minute drive instead.
Scheduling works the same way. NBAA notes the FAA dropped the e-STMP slot reservation system for Colorado ski airports ahead of the 2013-14 season. Ground delay programs replaced it, so you learn your delay on the day of the flight.
Aspen, Eagle and Rifle together absorb only about 18 operations per hour during short winter days. Demand on December 26 far exceeds that. Filing the night before is the practical defense.

Booking a Private Jet to Aspen in Ski Season
Peak demand runs from late December through March, and the holiday weeks are the binding constraint. Book four to six weeks out for Christmas, New Year’s and Presidents’ Day. Two weeks is workable for January midweek.
Aspen’s airport sits about three miles from downtown, so the transfer is short. Pre-booked SUVs still sell out on peak arrival days. If you land at Eagle or Rifle, confirm a winter-equipped vehicle rather than assuming one.
