Full Cessna Citation X and X+ specs
The Cessna Citation X+ is the fastest business jet Textron has ever certified, and the number is not marketing. The FAA verified a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935, or 536 knots true airspeed and 617 mph, during certification of the updated Citation X+. For the whole of its production run, no business jet in production flew faster.
That title has since moved. Gulfstream’s G700 matches Mach 0.935, and Bombardier’s Global 8000 is certified to Mach 0.95, which Bombardier markets as the world’s fastest business jet. The Citation X+ left production in December 2018, so “currently in production” claims about it are out of date by more than seven years.
One older claim also needs retiring. The Citation X was never the fastest civil aircraft ever certified for production: Concorde cruised at Mach 2.04 and carried paying passengers until 2003. Bombardier’s own wording for the Global 8000 is careful about this, calling it the fastest civil aircraft since Concorde.

What the Citation X is
The Cessna Citation X is a super-midsize business jet, Model 750, built by Cessna and later Textron Aviation from 1996 to 2018. The first aircraft was delivered to Arnold Palmer in April 1996. The final Citation X+ was delivered in December 2018, closing a 22-year run of 339 aircraft.
Two versions exist:
- Citation X (1996–2012) — maximum operating Mach 0.92, Rolls-Royce AE3007C engines, Honeywell Primus 2000 avionics.
- Citation X+ (2014–2018) — Mach 0.935, Rolls-Royce AE3007C2 engines, Garmin G5000 touchscreen avionics, a 15-inch fuselage stretch, and winglets.
Textron stopped production so the Citation Longitude would not compete against it in the same segment. That decision is why every Citation X you can fly today is a pre-owned aircraft on a charter certificate.
Citation X speed and range: the verified numbers
The Citation X+ carries an FAA-verified maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935 (536 ktas / 617 mph), a published range of 3,408 nautical miles, and a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet. The earlier Citation X tops out at Mach 0.92.
Why you will see 3,242 nm quoted. That figure is the pre-certification number Cessna published when the X+ was announced. Textron superseded it after certification, stating “an increased max range of 3,408 nautical miles” in its own releases. Broker listings and spec aggregators still copy the old 3,242 figure, so check the source before you plan a leg around it.
A note on the numbers you will see elsewhere. Some listings quote 604 knots or 695 mph for the Citation X. Those figures do not come from Textron and are not physically consistent with Mach 0.935 at altitude, where the speed of sound is roughly 573 knots. Mach 0.935 works out to about 536 knots true airspeed. Treat anything above 540 ktas as a transcription error.
The 51,000-foot ceiling matters more than it sounds. Most business jets top out between 41,000 and 45,000 feet. Flying at 51,000 puts the Citation X above nearly all traffic and most weather, which reduces routing delays and turbulence on long legs.
Why speed makes a charter cheaper, not more expensive
Charter is billed by the flight hour. That single fact inverts the assumption that a faster aircraft costs more per trip. If two jets carry similar hourly rates, the faster one bills fewer hours.
Work a transcontinental leg: Teterboro, New Jersey to Van Nuys, California, about 2,140 nautical miles.
Block times. Neither jet cruises at its maximum number the whole way, so use realistic block averages including climb, descent, and taxi:
- Citation X+ at roughly 490 knots block average: 2,140 ÷ 490 = 4.37 hours, or 4 hours 22 minutes.
- Challenger 350 at roughly 430 knots block average: 2,140 ÷ 430 = 4.98 hours, or 4 hours 59 minutes.
Cost. At market rates of about $4,700/hr for the Citation X and $5,600/hr for the Challenger 350:
- Citation X+: 4.37 × $4,700 = about $20,500
- Challenger 350: 4.98 × $5,600 = about $27,900
The Citation X arrives 37 minutes earlier and costs roughly $7,400 less on the same leg. The higher-rated aircraft is not the more expensive trip; the slower one is.
Where this reverses. Run the same logic on a 400-nm hop. The Citation X never reaches its efficient high-altitude cruise for long enough to matter, and block averages compress toward 400 knots for everything in the class. The X saves perhaps five minutes. Both aircraft hit the operator’s two-hour daily minimum, so the X is billed 2.0 × $4,700 = $9,400 against 2.0 × $3,600 = $7,200 for a Hawker 800XP with a comparable cabin. On that trip you paid $2,200 for five minutes.
The rule that falls out of the arithmetic: the Citation X is the cheapest way to fly a super-midsize cabin past roughly 1,500 nm, and an overpriced way to fly one under 800 nm. Speed only converts to savings when there is enough distance to bank it.
Cabin: what you give up for the speed
The Citation X cabin is 5 feet 8 inches tall, 5 feet 6 inches wide, and 23 feet 11 inches long. It seats up to nine, with most charter layouts configured for six to eight in double-club seating plus an enclosed aft lavatory.
That is a stand-up cabin by the standard we apply across this site, but a narrow one. We treat 5 ft 8 in as the bottom of the stand-up range, the same call we make on the Hawker 800XP at 5 ft 9 in, and well above the King Air 350 at 4 ft 9 in, where you move down the aisle in a stoop. Anyone over about 5 ft 8 in still ducks slightly at the aisle, but nobody is crouching to reach a seat. The 5-foot-6 width is roughly 20 inches narrower than a Challenger 350’s 7-foot-2 cabin, and you feel it on a five-hour leg. The airframe was designed around a high-speed wing with 37 degrees of sweep, and the narrow fuselage is part of what makes Mach 0.935 possible.
Two more practical cabin points:
- Baggage is not accessible in flight. The Challenger 350 gives you in-flight access to a pressurized 106 cubic-foot compartment. The Citation X does not.
- Seat count is nominal. The nine-seat figure includes a belted lavatory seat. Real charter comfort tops out around six on a five-hour leg.
What a Citation X costs
New. There is no new price. Production ended in December 2018.
Pre-owned. Values vary widely with variant, engine program status, and avionics. A late Citation X+ with Garmin G5000 and enrolled engines sits at a large premium over an early Mach 0.92 airframe with the original Honeywell suite. As with any older jet, engine maintenance program enrollment moves the number more than airframe hours do.
Charter. Market rates run roughly $4,200 to $5,000 per flight hour in the United States. These are broker market estimates rather than manufacturer figures, and they move with fuel price and region. Operating. The Citation X’s speed comes from thrust, and thrust comes from fuel. Fuel burn per hour is materially higher than a slower super-midsize. On a per-trip basis, the shorter block time claws much of that back, which is exactly the mechanism the arithmetic above describes. On a per-hour basis, it does not.

Choose the Citation X when arrival time is the constraint and the leg is long. Choose the Challenger 350 when six people need to work or sleep comfortably for five hours. Choose a heavy jet when the trip crosses an ocean, since 3,408 nm still does not reliably cross the Atlantic westbound.
The corrected range figure does not change that conclusion, and Textron’s own demonstration flight shows why. When Cessna first flew the X+ across the Atlantic, it staged the aircraft to Presque Isle, Maine first, then flew 2,788 nm eastbound to Paris Le Bourget in 5 hours 33 minutes.
Read what that staging tells you. The manufacturer used the northeasternmost airport in the continental United States to shorten the crossing, and still only made the trip eastbound. Paris to Teterboro is about 3,150 nm on the great circle, and westbound headwinds of 80 to 120 knots add several hundred nautical miles of effective air distance on top of that, before IFR reserves. The 166-nm correction from 3,242 to 3,408 nm does not close a gap that size.
Who the Citation X is for
Book a Citation X if you are flying transcontinental or longer, if your group is four to eight, and if landing sooner is worth more to you than cabin width. Charter brokers reach for it when a client’s schedule is the binding constraint rather than the budget.
Skip it if your typical trip is under 800 nm, where the speed produces minutes rather than hours. Skip it if you need in-flight baggage access or a genuinely wide cabin. And skip it if you need to cross the Atlantic without a stop, which is a job for a long-range aircraft.

The cost is cabin width. At 5 feet 6 inches, the Citation X is the narrowest aircraft in its class, and on short legs the speed advantage disappears into daily minimums. Match the aircraft to the distance and it is the best value in super-midsize charter. Book it for a 400-mile hop and you are paying a premium for nothing.
