The fastest private jet in production today is the Bombardier Global 8000, with a published top speed of Mach 0.95. Behind it sit three aircraft tied at Mach 0.935. Those numbers only mean something once you know what speed figure is being quoted, because manufacturers publish at least three different ones and most rankings mix them together.

How private jet speed is actually measured

Business jet speed is published in three separate figures, and they are not interchangeable. Confusing them is the single biggest reason two credible sources rank the same aircraft differently.

  • Maximum operating Mach (Mmo) is a certification limit. It is the fastest the aircraft may legally be flown, not a speed it holds for hours.
  • Maximum cruise speed is the fastest speed the aircraft actually sustains in level flight, usually quoted in knots true airspeed (KTAS).
  • Long-range cruise (LRC) is the speed that produces the published maximum range. It is always the slowest of the three.

Mach number is a ratio, not a speed. Mach 0.90 means 90% of the local speed of sound, and the speed of sound depends only on air temperature.

That matters because temperature changes with altitude. In the standard atmosphere the speed of sound is about 661 knots at sea level, but only about 574 knots at 36,000 feet and above, where the air sits at roughly minus 57°C.

So a single Mach number converts to two very different ground-covering speeds. We ran the conversion for every aircraft in this ranking at 574 knots, the value that applies at real business jet cruise altitudes, rather than at sea level.

1. Bombardier Global 8000 — Mach 0.95

Bombardier raised the Global 8000’s published top speed from Mach 0.94 to Mach 0.95 in October 2025, which is the highest figure certified for any civil aircraft flying today. The company markets it plainly as the world’s fastest business jet.

Note the two qualifiers Bombardier itself uses. “Business jet” excludes airliners, and “flying today” excludes retired types — the company’s own wording is “the fastest civil aircraft since Concorde.” Concorde was certified for production and cruised at Mach 2.04, so no aircraft on this list is the fastest civil aircraft ever built. Any source that says otherwise about a business jet has dropped a qualifier.

The claim has unusual test evidence behind it. In May 2021 a Global 7500 flight-test aircraft flew a series of shallow dives off Santa Maria, California and reached Mach 1.015, with a NASA F/A-18 as chase — the first transport-category aircraft to go supersonic on sustainable aviation fuel.

That was a validation dive, not a cruise condition. In normal service the aircraft cruises at Mach 0.92 or below, and Bombardier’s own 8,000 nm range figure is quoted at Mach 0.85.

2 (tie). Cessna Citation X+ — Mach 0.935

The Citation X+ held the outright speed title for two decades and is still the fastest jet most charter buyers can realistically book. Textron Aviation delivered the last one in December 2018, ending a 22-year, 339-aircraft run for the Citation X family.

Its own numbers show the gap between a limit and a cruise speed. AOPA’s flight report records roughly 525 KTAS at 41,000 feet, and only about 475 KTAS at its 51,000-foot ceiling.

Run those through the same conversion and the aircraft is cruising at Mach 0.915 down low and Mach 0.83 at the top of its envelope. Its Mmo of 0.935 is a number it touches, not a number it holds.

2 (tie). Gulfstream G800 — Mach 0.935

The G800 is the newest aircraft on this list and the only one whose speed rating went up after testing. Gulfstream originally projected Mach 0.925 and certified at Mach 0.935 when the FAA and EASA approved the aircraft in April 2025.

It also carries the longest published range of any purpose-built business jet at 8,200 nm. Gulfstream publishes 7,000 nm at its Mach 0.90 high-speed cruise, which is the clearest speed-versus-range trade in the category.

2 (tie). Gulfstream G700 — Mach 0.935

The G700 matches the G800’s Mmo on the same wing and the same Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines. It gives up 450 nm of range for a cabin that is ten feet longer, at 56 ft 11 in versus 46 ft 10 in.

Gulfstream publishes 7,750 nm at Mach 0.85 and 6,650 nm at Mach 0.90 for the G700.

5 (tie). Gulfstream G650ER — Mach 0.925

The G650ER was the aircraft that set the modern ultra-long-range benchmark, and it remains the most common very fast jet in charter and fractional fleets. Gulfstream publishes 7,500 nm at Mach 0.85 and 6,400 nm at Mach 0.90.

5 (tie). Bombardier Global 7500 — Mach 0.925

The Global 7500 shares its airframe with the Global 8000 but is rated 0.025 Mach lower. Bombardier publishes 7,700 nm of range and a four-zone cabin measuring 54 ft 5 in — the longest cabin of any purpose-built business jet in service.

5 (tie). Dassault Falcon 10X — Mach 0.925

The Falcon 10X is Dassault’s answer to the G700 and Global 7500, rated at Mach 0.925 with 7,500 nm of range. It is not yet in service, so it belongs on a speed ranking only with that label attached.

8. Dassault Falcon 8X — Mach 0.90

The three-engine Falcon 8X trails the top group by a genuine margin, at Mach 0.90 and 6,450 nm. Dassault trades that speed for short-field performance the Gulfstreams and Globals cannot match, which is why 8X operators fly into airports like London City and Aspen.

Why “fastest private jet” claims conflict across sources

Four specific measurement choices explain nearly every disagreement you will find between two speed rankings.

They convert Mach to mph at sea level. The Citation X+ is widely listed at 717 mph. That figure converts Mach 0.935 using the speed of sound in warm air near the ground, around 767 mph. At the altitude the aircraft actually cruises, Mach 0.935 is about 617 mph — a 100 mph difference produced entirely by the conversion.

They compare Mmo against max cruise. Ranking one aircraft’s certification limit against another’s sustained cruise speed is not a comparison. Check which figure each number is before you put them in the same column.

They ignore temperature deviation. Air aloft is often 10°C warmer or colder than standard. That moves the local speed of sound by roughly 1.7%, or about 10 knots at these Mach numbers — enough to flip two aircraft that sit 0.01 Mach apart.

They quote ground speed. A tailwind adds nothing to how fast the aircraft flies through the air, and jet-stream winds of 80 to 120 knots are routine on eastbound North Atlantic routes. Any speed record measured city-to-city is measuring the weather as much as the aircraft.

What the speed difference is worth on a real trip

For most buyers the answer is less than an hour, and often less than half an hour. Here is the arithmetic on three common legs, using still-air true airspeeds.

Two things follow from that table. On a domestic leg, the fastest private jet in the world saves you less time than one slow taxi queue at a busy FBO.

On an intercontinental leg the gap becomes real — but that is also the leg where flying at high-speed cruise costs you the most range. It is a trade, not a free upgrade.

What a fast jet gives up

Speed is bought with fuel, and the published range figures show exactly how much. The G800 flies 8,200 nm at Mach 0.85 and 7,000 nm at Mach 0.90.

That is 1,200 nm of range — 15% — surrendered for 29 knots. On a 7,000 nm mission, those 29 knots save about 48 minutes. Whether that trade is worth making depends entirely on whether the slower speed still reaches your destination nonstop.

The pattern is worth noticing. Between a light jet and the fastest jet in the world, the real cruise difference is about 70 knots — roughly 13%. Which fast jet should you actually book

Choose the Global 8000 or a G800 only if you are flying an intercontinental leg where the extra Mach converts into a full hour. Choose a G650ER for the same missions when availability matters more than a 0.01 Mach edge, because the fleet is far larger.

Choose a Citation X+ if you want the fastest cabin available on the domestic charter market at super-midsize money. And choose a Falcon 8X if your destination has a short runway, because arriving at the closer airport beats arriving faster at the farther one.

How much faster is a private jet than a commercial airliner?

Can a private jet fly supersonic?

No civil business jet is certified for supersonic cruise. No production business jet may be flown past its maximum operating Mach in service, and the highest civil limit today is the Global 8000's Mach 0.95.
