Picking the right category is the decision that most affects both your cost and whether your trip flies nonstop. This guide compares all six with real numbers, then gives a framework for matching a category to a specific trip.

Turboprops

Turboprops are propeller aircraft with turbine engines, and they are the cheapest way to fly privately on short trips.

They cruise around 300 knots, which is roughly 40% slower than a light jet, but they burn far less fuel and get in and out of short, unpaved, and high-elevation runways that jets cannot use. On a 250-mile leg the speed difference costs you about 12 minutes.

The Beechcraft King Air 350 is the most-flown business turboprop in the world, carrying up to 11 at about $2,000–$2,500 an hour. The single-engine Pilatus PC-12 is the other volume seller, popular for its large cargo door and short-field performance.

Choose a turboprop when: the leg is under about 500 miles, the destination airport is small, or budget is the deciding factor. Skip it when: anyone on board will be unhappy at 25,000 feet in weather that a jet would fly above.

Light jets

Light jets are the entry point to true jet travel, seating five to seven with 1,200–2,000 nautical miles of range.

Cabins are typically 4’9“–5’0“ tall, so you cannot stand up. Lavatories are usually a curtained belted seat at the rear rather than an enclosed room. Baggage volume runs 40–70 cubic feet, which is the constraint that catches most first-timers.

The Embraer Phenom 300 has been the best-selling light jet for more than a decade, flying about 2,010 nautical miles at Mach 0.80. The Cessna Citation CJ3+ and CJ4 are the other common charter light jets.

Choose a light jet when: four to six people are flying under about 1,500 miles with normal luggage. Skip it when: you need a stand-up cabin, an enclosed lavatory, or you are carrying ski or golf equipment for a full group.

Midsize jets

Midsize jets are the first category with a true stand-up cabin and an enclosed lavatory, which is why they are the most common choice for business travel.

Range runs 2,000–2,800 nautical miles, seating seven to nine. Cabin height is typically 5’8“–5’9“, enough to stand for most adults. Baggage runs 55–90 cubic feet, and the compartment is usually accessible in flight.

The Hawker 800XP remains a charter workhorse despite production ending, flying about 2,540 nautical miles at roughly $3,300–$3,900 an hour. The Citation XLS+ and Learjet 60 fill the same slot.

Choose a midsize when: you need a real cabin for a three-to-four-hour flight, or you are carrying more luggage than a light jet holds. Skip it when: the route is a genuine transcontinental leg — most midsize jets cannot do New York to Los Angeles westbound in winter without a stop.

Super-midsize jets

Super-midsize jets are the value sweet spot in charter, combining transcontinental range with a full stand-up cabin at roughly half the hourly cost of a heavy jet.

Range is 3,000–3,600 nautical miles with eight to ten seats and cabin heights around 6’0“. This is the smallest category that reliably flies coast-to-coast in the United States nonstop in both directions.

The Bombardier Challenger 350 is the best-selling super-midsize of the last decade, at 3,200 nautical miles and around $4,600–$5,200 an hour. The Citation X+ is the speed play at Mach 0.935, the fastest business jet of its production era, though the Global 8000 has since taken the outright title at Mach 0.95. The Citation Longitude and Praetor 600 are the newer entrants.

Choose a super-midsize when: the trip is transcontinental, or six-plus people need range and a real cabin. Skip it when: every leg is under two hours, where you are paying for range you never use.

Heavy jets

Heavy jets buy cabin volume and intercontinental range, and the price step up from super-midsize is steep.

Range spans 4,000–6,800 nautical miles with 10–16 seats, cabins around 6’2“ tall, and 150+ cubic feet of baggage. Most have a flight attendant, a full galley, and often a separate rest area.

The Gulfstream G550 defined this category for a decade, flying 6,750 nautical miles at $8,000–$9,500 an hour. The Challenger 650 and the Dassault Falcon 900 are the other common charter heavies, the Falcon notable for three engines and short-field capability that most heavy jets lack.

Choose a heavy when: the trip crosses an ocean, or 10+ people fly together with full luggage. Skip it when: a super-midsize does the mission — the hourly gap is $3,000–$4,000, which is a lot for cabin width you may not need.

Ultra-long-range jets

Ultra-long-range jets exist to remove the fuel stop from intercontinental flying, and nothing else justifies their cost.

Range runs 6,500–7,700 nautical miles with 13–19 seats. These are the aircraft that fly New York to Tokyo or London to Singapore nonstop. Cabins are typically divided into three or four zones with a proper bedroom on the longest variants.

The Gulfstream G650ER flies roughly 7,500 nautical miles at $10,000–$12,000 an hour. The G700 is the newer flagship at 7,500 nautical miles and Mach 0.935. The Bombardier Global 7500 and the Falcon 10X compete directly.

Choose ultra-long-range when: the route genuinely exceeds what a heavy jet can fly nonstop. Skip it when: you would accept one technical stop — a heavy jet plus a 45-minute fuel stop is usually far cheaper than the ultra-long-range premium.

Which private jet type fits your trip?

Work through four questions in this order, because each one can eliminate categories the next question cannot.

  1. How far is the leg, into a headwind, in the worst season you will fly it? This sets your minimum category. Do not use the brochure number — see below.
  2. How many passengers, and how much luggage by dimension? Payload and baggage volume rule out categories that the range test passed. Six adults with ski bags do not fit a light jet.
  3. What does the airport require? Runway length, elevation, and approach restrictions matter. Aspen, Eagle, and many mountain and island fields limit which types can operate.
  4. How long is the flight in the seat? Above roughly three hours, a stand-up cabin and an enclosed lavatory stop being a luxury. That is the line between light and midsize.

Only after those four should you optimize on price. A cheaper category that fails any of the four is not cheaper.

The one-category-down test, with real numbers

The most common way to overspend on charter is buying a category up when you do not need it. The second most common is buying a category down and paying for a fuel stop. Here is how to tell them apart.

Take Los Angeles to New York, about 2,150 nautical miles eastbound and harder westbound against the jet stream.

Super-midsize: roughly 4.9 hours at $5,200 an hour, or about $25,500 nonstop.

Midsize: roughly $3,600 an hour. On paper 5.5 hours is $19,800, which looks like a $5,700 saving. Westbound in winter it will not make it nonstop, so add a fuel stop: about 50 minutes of extra block time and $1,200 in handling and fuel-uplift fees. The real number becomes roughly $23,900.

The saving is now about $1,600, in exchange for 1.4 extra hours and an added point of failure. That is the calculation to run every time — not category price, but total trip cost including any stop the smaller aircraft forces.

The inversion matters too. On a 700-mile leg with four people, the same midsize costs about $7,900 against $11,400 for the super-midsize, and neither needs a stop. There the smaller category wins outright.

What brochure range doesn’t tell you

Published range figures are best-case numbers, and planning against them is the most reliable way to end up with an unplanned fuel stop.

Manufacturer range is normally quoted at long-range cruise, with four passengers, no wind, and standard reserves. Your trip has eight passengers, luggage, and a headwind.

A working rule: subtract 15–20% from the brochure figure for realistic planning. A jet advertised at 2,540 nautical miles should be treated as roughly 2,100 for a full load in winter.

Three other numbers matter and rarely appear in category comparisons:

  • Payload with full fuel. Many jets cannot carry a full cabin and full tanks simultaneously. Ask the operator for this figure directly.
  • Balanced field length. Short or high-elevation runways eliminate types that the range test cleared.
  • Cabin altitude. Newer aircraft pressurize to a lower cabin altitude, which measurably reduces fatigue on flights over four hours.

Very light jets and where they fit

Very light jets are a seventh category that sits below light jets, and they suit a narrow set of trips.

Aircraft such as the Cirrus Vision Jet and the Embraer Phenom 100 carry four to five passengers 1,000–1,300 nautical miles at roughly $2,200–$2,900 an hour. Their appeal is jet speed at turboprop-adjacent cost.

The limit is payload. With four adults and bags, most very light jets cannot carry full fuel, so real-world range falls well short of the published figure. For most charter buyers a turboprop is more useful for the same money.
