Booking a private jet to Europe is a range problem before it is a budget problem. The Atlantic sets a hard floor on which aircraft can even be offered to you. Once you know the distance, the aircraft list shortens fast, and the price follows from there.

How far it really is — the numbers that pick your aircraft

The distance that matters is the great-circle distance in nautical miles, not the mileage an airline quotes. Below are the pairs people actually fly, computed from published airport coordinates. Real flight-planned routes run a little longer because of track routing and weather.

New York to London is the short end of the Atlantic. Los Angeles to London is 58% farther and knocks most of the fleet out.

Which jets cross nonstop, and which cannot

Every published range figure is a marketing number with a footnote, and the footnote decides your trip. Gulfstream lists the G700 at 7,750 nm and the G600 at 6,600 nm, both quoted at Mach 0.85 with 8 passengers, 4 crew and NBAA IFR reserves. Bombardier advertises the Global 7500 at 7,700 nm and the Global 6500 at 6,600 nm on the same 8-passenger, 4-crew basis.

Dassault Aviation publishes the Falcon 8X at 6,450 nm, but at Mach 0.80 with 8 passengers and only 3 crew, plus an 85% annual wind allowance. Those are three different measuring sticks. Comparing them head to head without reading the footnotes is the most common mistake buyers make.

Now look at the smaller aircraft. Bombardier quotes the Challenger 3500 at 3,400 nm — with 4 passengers and 2 crew, at Mach 0.77. Textron Aviation lists the Citation Longitude at 3,500 nm. The Challenger 650 is published at 4,000 nm.

So a 3,400 nm super-midsize looks like it clears the 2,990 nm to London with room to spare. It does — for four people. Load seven passengers and their luggage and fuel comes off to stay under max takeoff weight. That is why the same aircraft that flew your friend nonstop is offered to you with a stop.

One more thing worth checking before you sign. Gulfstream’s current lineup pages run G300 through G800, and Bombardier’s run Global 5500 through Global 8000. The G550, G650ER, Global 6000 and Challenger 350 that fill charter fleets are no longer on those pages, so the specs in a broker’s deck are being copied from somewhere else. Why westbound is the hard direction

The return leg is longer than the outbound, and it is longer every single time. NOAA describes jet streams as narrow bands of strong wind around 30,000 feet where the winds blow west to east, strongest in winter. Eastbound you ride them. Westbound you fight them.

Work a Teterboro–Luton crossing at Mach 0.85, roughly 487 knots true airspeed at FL410. With an 80-knot average tailwind, groundspeed is 567 knots and 2,990 nm takes 5.3 hours in the air. With an 80-knot headwind it is 407 knots and 7.3 hours. Add taxi, climb and descent and you get about 6h 15m eastbound against 7h 45m westbound.

That 1.5-hour gap is billable. At a $16,000 hourly rate for an ultra-long-range jet, the identical route costs about $24,000 more coming home. It is also why a marginal aircraft can be legal nonstop eastbound and need a fuel stop westbound, on the same trip, on the same tanks. If a quote shows one price for “round trip,” ask how many hours each direction was priced at.

The fuel stops that actually get used

Transatlantic tech stops are chosen by geometry, not preference. From the US Northeast the shortlist is short.

  • Gander, Newfoundland (CYQX) — 957 nm from Teterboro, 2,033 nm on to Luton. The default eastbound stop, and the default westbound diversion.
  • St. John’s, Newfoundland (CYYT) — 998 nm out, 2,004 nm across. Slightly shorter oceanic leg than Gander.
  • Goose Bay, Labrador (CYYR) — 930 nm out, 2,126 nm across. Favoured when the routing runs high-latitude.
  • Bangor, Maine (KBGR) — only 331 nm from Teterboro, so it is a US-side customs and top-off stop, not an ocean stop. The crossing from Bangor is still 2,662 nm.
  • Keflavík, Iceland (BIKF) — 2,245 nm from Teterboro and only 1,005 nm on to London. The best split for aircraft that are short westbound.
  • Santa Maria, Azores (LPAZ) — the southern route. 2,864 nm from Miami, then 767 nm to Lisbon or 1,525 nm to Nice.
  • Shannon, Ireland (EINN) — 2,673 nm from Teterboro and 318 nm from London. Europe’s first-landfall stop and the standard westbound top-off.

Budget 60 to 90 minutes on the ground for a tech stop. Fuel, a customs handler and a crew break rarely go faster than that, and winter de-icing at Gander can double it.

Oceanic crossings are equipment-gated, and a non-compliant aircraft simply cannot be filed on the track. The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Publication sets out the oceanic rules, and business jets meet the same bar as airliners.

  • Airspace approval. North Atlantic High Level Airspace (HLA) operations require specific approval, and flights transiting toward it must forward a full route for verification.
  • RVSM. Non-RVSM aircraft are not permitted in RVSM airspace unless they qualify as an excepted aircraft and are pre-approved by the controlling unit.
  • Datalink. In the New York Oceanic FIR, CPDLC and ADS-C work only through Inmarsat or Iridium. If the satellite code is missing from the flight plan, the logon is rejected outright.
  • HF radio. Crews must keep HF capability with the oceanic radio station throughout, whatever the datalink status.
  • Navigation performance. RNP 4 or RNP 10 authorisation governs which separation the aircraft is eligible for, alongside RCP 240 and RSP 180 communication and surveillance performance.
  • Survival equipment. 14 CFR 91.509 requires a life preserver with a locator light for every occupant, liferafts sized for the occupants, one pyrotechnic signalling device per raft, a self-buoyant emergency radio, a lifeline, and a survival kit attached to each raft. Immersion suits are not required by that rule — operators that carry them on North Atlantic winter crossings do so as policy, and it is a fair question to ask.
  • Redundant avionics. 14 CFR 91.511 requires two transmitters, two independent receivers and two independent navigation units for flights beyond 100 nm from shore.

Ask the operator whether the specific tail number is HLA-approved, RVSM-approved and datalink-equipped. Fleet-wide answers are not the same as tail-specific ones.

Entry, permits and slots on the European side

Paperwork on the European end has changed more in the last two years than the flying has. The Entry/Exit System began its progressive rollout on 12 October 2025 and reached full operation on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamping with biometric registration for non-EU short-stay travellers. Schengen’s 90-days-in-any-180 limit is now counted by machine, not by a border officer squinting at ink.

ETIAS is a separate system and is not yet in operation. The European Commission states plainly that no applications are being collected, and that the launch date will be announced several months ahead. Anyone selling you an ETIAS application today is selling nothing.

The UK runs its own scheme. A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation costs £20, covers stays of up to six months, and is needed by travellers from the USA, Europe, Canada and Australia — including anyone passing through UK border control in transit. Every passenger needs their own, children included.

On the US side, an eAPIS manifest goes to CBP before departure. Your operator files it, but passport details have to be with them well before the crew briefs.

London arrivals need airport-specific planning. Luton is a slot-coordinated commercial airport where business aviation competes for capacity. Farnborough is business-aviation-only and works on prior permission. Biggin Hill has restricted operating hours set by its local agreement. RAF Northolt is a military station that accepts a limited number of civil movements by prior arrangement, so it is never a same-day fallback.

One rule catches US-based flyers every trip. European rules reserve commercial point-to-point flying inside the EU for carriers holding an EU operating licence, which EASA oversees. Your N-registered charter can fly you to Nice and home again. It generally cannot sell you the Nice–Geneva hop in the middle.

What a private jet to Europe actually costs

Ultra-long-range jet, nonstop both ways, $16,000/hr:

  • Flying: 6.25 h east + 7.75 h west = 14.0 h × $16,000 = $224,000
  • Positioning the aircraft to Teterboro and home: 3.0 h × $16,000 = $48,000
  • Landing, three nights’ parking, international handling both ends: ~$11,000
  • Eurocontrol route charges plus NAV CANADA oceanic charges: ~$5,000
  • Total: ~$288,000, 14.0 hours in the air

Super-midsize, one fuel stop each way, $9,500/hr:

  • Flying: 7.1 h east + 8.1 h west = 15.2 h × $9,500 = $144,400

  • Route and oceanic charges: ~$5,000
  • Second crew positioned for the westbound duty day: ~$6,500
  • Total: ~$198,400, 15.2 hours in the air plus 2.5 hours on the ground

EUROCONTROL bills en-route charges as a single amount per flight regardless of how many states you overfly, using national unit rates set each 1 January, with terminal charges separate. NAV CANADA recovers its oceanic and en-route services through its own published customer charges. Neither is large next to the hourly rate, but both appear as line items you did not ask for.

Tax works differently across the water. The 7.5% federal excise tax that lands on domestic charter does not apply the same way to a flight that begins or ends outside the US. IRS Publication 510 sets the 2026 international air travel facilities tax at $23.40 per person for flights beginning or ending in the continental United States. Four passengers, both directions: about $187. Verify the treatment of your specific trip with the operator before you assume the domestic percentage tax disappears.

The contrarian read: the fuel stop is not the expensive option. Brokers frame the big jet as the smart-money choice because the stop “costs you.” Run the numbers and the stop saves roughly $90,000 on this trip while costing about 3.7 hours. You are paying around $24,000 per hour saved. That is a defensible purchase if the trip is time-critical, and a poor one if it is not.

Booking a private jet to Europe: season, lead time and empty legs

Transatlantic demand moves in predictable blocks. Nice, Ibiza and the Greek islands peak from June through early September. Geneva and Salzburg peak from Christmas through March, and Cannes, Monaco and the Paris shows each drain the heavy-jet fleet in their own week.

Give yourself three to four weeks for peak-season dates and about one week off-peak. Same-week availability exists, but you take whichever tail is free rather than the one you wanted.

Empty legs are thinner here than on domestic routes. Aircraft do reposition across the Atlantic, but rarely on a schedule that matches yours.
