Range and Speed Compared

The Gulfstream G650ER flies 750 more nautical miles than the G550. Gulfstream rates the G550 at 6,750 nautical miles with National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) instrument flight rules (IFR) reserves.

It rates the G650ER at 7,500 nm at Mach 0.85, and the standard G650 at 7,000 nm. That extra range decides a small number of routes and no others.

New York to Dubai, Los Angeles to London, and Hong Kong to San Francisco all fit inside the G550’s 6,750 nm nonstop. New York to Singapore does not, at roughly 8,300 nm, and neither does Los Angeles to Johannesburg. Those routes need a G650ER or newer, and a G550 attempting them means a fuel stop that erases the schedule advantage of chartering a heavy jet in the first place.

Speed tells a smaller story than the Mach numbers suggest. Maximum operating speed is Mach 0.885 for the G550 against Mach 0.925 for the G650, a gap of roughly 23 knots at cruise altitude. Across a 4,000 nm ocean crossing, that difference is about 30 minutes, not the hour a 4-point Mach spread implies on paper.

The G650ER also trades range for speed. That trade is bigger than most buyers expect. Flying it at Mach 0.90 instead of Mach 0.85 costs about 1,100 nm of range, close to 15 percent.

On a New York to Hong Kong routing, that is the difference between nonstop and a fuel stop in Anchorage. The tradeoff applies only to the G650ER, since the G550’s published range figure already reflects its normal cruise setting.

Cabin Size and Comfort Compared

The G650’s cabin is 10 inches wider than the G550’s, and passengers notice that gap first. Cabin width runs 7 feet 4 inches on the G550 against 8 feet 2 inches on the G650 and G650ER. Cabin height differs by just one inch, 6 feet 2 inches versus 6 feet 3 inches.

Cabin width turns a four-seat club section from tight into roomy, and first-time G550 flyers most often skip checking it before their first trip.

Length follows the same pattern. The G650 cabin runs 46 feet 10 inches against 43 feet 11 inches on the G550, a difference of almost three feet.

That extra length typically buys a fourth living area or a larger crew rest suite. Both aircraft seat up to 19 passengers on paper, but real charter configurations rarely go that high.

A G550 usually seats up to 19 across three or four living areas and sleeps about 8. A G650 charter layout typically holds 13 to 16 passengers once a divan, crew rest area, and full galley are built in, and it sleeps up to 10.

Both jets give crews in-flight access to the baggage compartment, which matters more on a 12-hour leg than any interior finish. Ski bags and golf clubs fit in either cabin.

The G650 is nicer inside. The real question is whether the extra width is worth the extra money for your specific group size and trip length.

What a Used G550 or G650 Costs to Buy

A pre-owned G650 costs roughly three to four times what a pre-owned G550 costs, and the age of each airframe matters less than its maintenance history. Aircraft Bluebook values published for spring 2025 put the G550 between about $11.5 million for an early 2003 aircraft and about $34 million for a 2020 build.

Corporate Jet Investor reported typical 2026 asking prices of $40 million to $55 million for a G650ER. AMSTAT put the broader fleet’s average asking price lower, around $35.6 million, because that figure includes older, higher-time airframes.

Treat every G650 figure as an asking price rather than a transaction price. Gulfstream does not publish either aircraft’s resale values, and large-cabin jets have been trading below ask as more pre-owned inventory has reached the market.

Three factors move either aircraft’s price by millions, regardless of airframe age:

  • Engine program status. An aircraft enrolled on a Rolls-Royce hourly maintenance program transfers that coverage to the buyer. One that is not carries a future overhaul cost the buyer absorbs at purchase.
  • Avionics compliance. ADS-B, FANS, and cockpit display upgrades are expensive retrofits, and an unupgraded airframe is restricted from some routes and airspace.
  • Interior and paint cycle. A large-cabin refurbishment runs into seven figures on either aircraft and takes months of hangar time.

A pre-buy inspection with a shop that knows the specific type, G550 or G650, is the cheapest money spent on either purchase. It is the step buyers skip most often and regret first.

Charter Cost Per Mile

The G550 costs less per nautical mile than the G650ER, and the gap holds even after accounting for its slower cruise speed. At a representative $9,000 hourly rate and roughly 470-knot block speed, the G550 runs about $19 per nautical mile. The G650ER, at a representative $12,500 hourly rate and roughly 500-knot block speed, runs about $25 per nautical mile.

Price a specific trip and the arithmetic gets concrete. A 4,000 nm crossing takes about 8 hours 31 minutes in a G550 and about 8 hours flat in a G650ER. That gap puts the G550 leg at roughly $76,500 and the G650ER leg at roughly $100,000.

The difference, about $23,500 to save 31 minutes, works out to roughly $45,000 per hour of time saved. For a scheduling-constrained flyer on a 200-hour year, that trade can be worth it. For most single trips it is not, and this math is why a 20-plus-year-old airframe still fills charter calendars against a newer, faster jet.

G550 and G650 Fleet Availability Compared

The G550 fleet is larger and older. The G650 fleet is smaller and newer. That changes what “available” means for each type.

Gulfstream built more than 600 G550s across an 18-year run. Special-mission variants have kept reaching military and government customers even after commercial production ended, which keeps parts and support healthier than a typical discontinued type. AMSTAT data cited by Corporate Jet Investor put the G650ER fleet at 416 aircraft as of mid-2025, with essentially the whole fleet still active.

A bigger, older fleet means deeper charter supply and more listings to compare when buying. A smaller, newer fleet means less inventory, though its airframes sit closer, on average, to their original condition and further from a major overhaul.

Neither gap is severe enough to change a decision on its own. A charter broker will usually find a G550 faster than a G650ER during a peak travel window, simply because more of them exist.

Who Should Choose the G550 vs G650

Choose the G550 when your longest routine leg sits under about 6,500 nautical miles and cabin width is not the deciding factor for your group.

Choose the G650 or G650ER when any of these apply:

  • Your longest routine leg regularly exceeds 6,500 nautical miles.
  • Eight or more passengers will spend 10 or more hours together in the cabin.
  • The extra 10 inches of cabin width matters more to your clients or family than the price difference.

Budget draws the same line from the other direction. A G550 purchase or charter keeps ultra-long-range capability inside a price band the G650 cannot match.

Expect roughly 25 to 30 percent less per charter hour and less than half the typical purchase price. A G650 buyer is paying for range headroom and cabin space a G550 owner has decided not to need.

Who This Is Not For

This comparison is not for a buyer who wants a factory warranty and current-production support. Both the G550 and the G650 are out of production, so that buyer should look at the in-production G700 instead.

It is also not for anyone flying short domestic hops under two hours. A Challenger 350 or a light jet covers that trip for a third of either aircraft’s hourly rate. On a leg that short, positioning and crew costs swamp the flight time on both aircraft.

What Would Change Our Answer

A meaningful drop in G650ER asking prices would flip this recommendation toward the newer aircraft. The used-market price gap between a G550 and a G650ER would need to narrow, from three or four times to closer to double.

At that point, the wider cabin and longer range would justify the premium for most large-cabin buyers. That would hold even for buyers who do not strictly need the extra reach.

The reverse condition works too. A route map that regularly includes 7,000 nm-plus pairings disqualifies the G550 outright, regardless of price, because no discount changes a jet’s physical range.

How to Fly Either Aircraft Without Buying One

Both the G550 and the G650 sit in the heavy or ultra-long-range tier of most fractional and jet card programs. Large-cabin tiers at NetJets and Flexjet include aircraft in this class.
